PUPPY KINDERGARTEN 101

A "PUPPY KINDERGARTEN" TESTIMONIAL: That was GREAT last night. This morning Lilli-Pup and I worked together and she was great! I printed off your homework. Thanks so much for all your help – you are really wonderful – it’s very telling that you just “have a way” with puppies! I was a bit embarrassed when I brought her into the group – she’s so wacky-hyper sometimes. I thought she would never pay attention to me...and then...what do you know...it works! See you next week! - Mary Ann

Puppy Kindergarten classes should expose your puppy to new situations, help you teach good manners and hold appropriate play sessions so your puppy may learn
bite-inhibition as well as how not to become the bully puppy or become fearful of people, puppies or new experiences.  Class should include some training for basic skills/behaviors. Puppy class must be a pleasant experience for both of you. At Dog Training by PJ our puppy class is as follows:

·         Puppies can start class* between 7 weeks to 18 weeks of age.  (*as of the start date of class.)

·         Puppy Kindergarten 101 is six, one-hour sessions.

·         Puppies are exposed to discovery walks, including a variety of objects and situations and to other people and other puppies in socializing play sessions. (*regular, weekly puppy play is offered at Dog Training by PJ -  Puppy must be current on vaccinations and be younger than 18 weeks of age (unless in a current puppy class.) There is a  minimal attendance fee, and

o   If you use FACEBOOK – Mark “LIKE” on Dog Training by PJ’s FB page – you’ll see the event posted or check the HOME PAGE in the left corner FB section and scroll through for the event listing.)

·         Puppies learn basic manners, such as no jumping, no biting (puppy mouthing) and how to walk politely on leash, sit, down, stand, come, settle, leave it, touch/targeting, wait, stay, “learn to catch behavior,” crawl, and much more! Training is training even if it is fun!

·         Other prevention topics are discussed to help prevent common problems such as housetraining, management, resource/food guarding, separation anxiety, crate training and destructive behaviors. Many prevention topics are already written,  please review the topics, you’ll be happy you read these valuable short articles: http://dogtrainingbypj.com/resources.htm

·         Need immediate help, come talk to us for no additional charge: http://dogtrainingbypj.com/come_talk.htm

·         Owners are provided electronic back-up materials, handouts and videos.  (Hard-copies are available if necessary should you not receive e-mail, however the videos won’t be available.)

·         Class is held indoors in a climate controlled, sanitized concrete floor for the safety and health of your puppy.

·        Proof of current vaccinations is required as follows:

o   We require the puppies be current in their vaccination schedule and the first vaccination be administered seven days prior to attending class or puppy play.

o   Most puppies are not vaccinated for Rabies until they have received some of the "puppy series vaccinations."

o   Rabies vaccination is not required to attend class as a puppy current in the vaccination schedule.

o    We encourage Bordetella but it is not required since we do not board dogs or puppies (We do encourage you to refer to your Veterinarian’s recommendation for Bordetella.)

o    At Dog Training by PJ we follow the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents' Report on Cat and Dog Vaccines recommendations.  (http://www.avma.org/avmacollections/rabies/javma_221_10_1401.PDF)  For puppies the core vaccines include distemper, canine adenovirus-2 (hepatitis and respiratory disease), canine parvovirus-2, and rabies

o   These puppy shots are also called “five in one” or DHLP-P vaccinations because they are a combination vaccine that will immunize against five very common but potentially deadly diseases. Therefore, we generally have puppies that have begun their puppy shot series and complete them as they continue through class.  Each puppy MUST be current in their vaccination schedule.

TOY PUPPY AND TOY DOG CLASS

A "TOY PUPPY/DOG CLASS" TESTIMONIAL: Wow! We were so impressed by your knowledge and experience on small dogs.  We are so happy to have chosen Dog Training by PJ for our Chihuahua! We learned so much in class, had a blast and now know we don’t have to have the “typical Chihuahua” everyone always says they hate! We were able discover better ways to teach our small Chihuahua and also brought her to toy play --- how fun is that!  We enjoyed the very up-to-date materials and videos you sent us each week after class.  Those materials made it so much easier to remember things we learned in class and we’ll have it always to refer to if needed.  You are exceptional! Your love your dogs and people just glows! We’ll be back for many more classes and again thank you --- we DON’T have  the barky Chihuahua!  -- Jim & Gloria, Reno.

ADOLESCENT DOG 101

An ADOLESCENT CLASS TESTIMONIAL:  Seven years ago, I bought an English Cocker Spaniel Puppy.  My intent was to work him as a Pet Therapy Dog.  He was adorable, and I knew people would love him.  It did not take long to realize that cute and friendly was not the same as calm and quiet.  We tried many local dog trainers, but nothing fit our personality.  We Finally tried Dog Training by PJ.  While trying to heel in class, I knew we had found our trainer.  Rather than forcing him to heel by breaking his spirit, she considered his breed and showed us how to heel in a way that we were both comfortable.  Over the next three years, we took a variety of classes from PJ.   With so many options, we were never bored.  Dozer enjoyed the tricks class the best!  Dozer the Dog has been a Paws for Love Pet Therapy Dog for the past five years.  Whenever anyone comments on how well behaved he is, I tell them PJ trained me, and I trained my dog.  ~  Tamera Buzick
